All contests that are "National Eligible" will follow the rules found in the National Standards Manual/CD to the best of our abilities.

Architectural Drafting

Carpentry

Each student must be practiced in wall framing, rafter layout and stair stringer layout. The students is responsible for bringing a skill saw and saw horses to the contest. Chop saws will not be allowed or used at the contest.

Culinary

Orange Cajun Chicken Breasts
Rice Pilaf
Fresh Vegetable Crudites w/Herb Dip - (this one is actually the exact recipe from Nationals a few years ago.)

Equipment that contestants need to bring:
Knives
Measuring cups and measuring spoons
Any special tools for cutting garnishes or relishes

Clothing
White or black work pants, or black and white checkered chef's pants; White chef's jacket White or Black shoes, closed toes - NO SANDALS!
White apron
Hair should be contained (hairnets will be provided, if necessary) No face piercings, no extra jewelry on wrists or hands

Baking

Baked pie shell, (empty), and choice of a way to use the remaining crust - such as a kringle, turnover, etc.
Baguettes, two loaves
Frost and decorate a simple round cake - need to know writing, roses, borders, etc.

Equipment that contestants need to bring:
Palet knife or small offset spatula for frosting Cake decorating tips (disposable bags will be provided) Small scissors measuring cups measuring spoons

Clothing
Same as above

Diesel Technology

Contest will be held in Cheyenne at LCCC on April 23-24, 2010

Extemporaneous Speech

The topic will come from the SkillsUSA Leadership handbook and all contestants will be assigned the same topic. Each contestant will have 15 minutes to prepare for the contest and will have access to The Leadership Manual, Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, and Roget's Thesaurus. 3' x 5' cards will be supplied and can be used in the Presentation if so desired. See section on Extemporaneous Speech for more details.

Job Interview

Job Interview must bring 3 additional copies to be presented to the judges at the competition. Finalists will have the opportunity to revise the resume if they so desire. So, if a student is competing in a technical skill contest and Job Interview - they need 4 copies of their resume.

Prepared Speech

CONTEST WILL USE THE NATIONAL THEME: The topic to be addressed by contestants in these events is how our slogan, SkillsUSA: Champions at Work, relates to our national program of work in the area of the Professional Development.

Technical Drafting

Technical Drafting contestants are allowed to bring their own computers or will have the opportunity to load software on the computers available in the labs. For the Technical Drafting contest, the program that is currently available is SolidWorks. Time has been planned for students to load different software on the computers if they choose to do so.

Welding – Intermediate

This contest is for students who are beyond the novice level but based on advisor's evaluation are not prepared for the advanced level. This is a state contest and is not a national qualifier

Welding – Novice

This contest is for students that are generally in their first year of a welding program. This is a state contest and is not a national qualifier.

Welding Fabrication

Welding Fabrication contest will also be held in Gillette on April 9-10, 2010 at the Gillette College Tech Center.

General Info

Chapters may enter more than one team in the Opening and Closing Ceremony Contest, Chapter Business Contest, Quiz Bowl and the Health Knowledge Bowl Contest.

2010 SkillsUSA Dress Code

Opening Session, Testing Session and Awards Ceremony:

All contestants are required to be in either official SkillsUSA Dress OR black pants/black skirt with the 2010 conference shirt during the opening sessions and testing session. The conference shirt will be distributed to advisors when they pick up their registration packet. NO CAPS DURING GENERAL SESSIONS PLEASE!!!! Students will be asked to remove them before entering the opening and closing ceremonies.

The clothing requirements listed in the Technical Standards document/CD are for national contests. IF the contestant has the clothing used at nationals, they may also wear them for the state competition. However, we are not requiring that contestants purchase the clothing that is listed for the state competitions.

In regards to clothing requirements for the contests (not opening, testing, or closing sessions), the following rules will apply:

Leadership Contests:

REQUIRED: Official Dress

OCC, Chapter Business, Health Knowledge Bowl, Public Speaking Contests, Demonstrations Contests, Job Interviews, Customer Service, and any contest that requires a formal presentation before the judges.

NOTE: We do have jackets and ties available for use by those students who do not have official dress for these contests which can be checked out to contestants at the Registration Booth prior to the students scheduled time of competition. It is the student's responsibility to wear appropriate black slacks, or skirts with black socks, or hose, and black shoes plus a white shirt or blouse for these competitions.

Technical Contests:

Clothing that is appropriate in the school program is acceptable. Ex. Coveralls for welding, auto, etc. Scrubs for Health Occ. Contests, etc.

Proper grooming in regards to safety guidelines, (hair pulled back, jewelry, loose fitting clothing, footwear) is essential to avoid disqualification. Disqualification is at the discretion of the contest judge.

Students will receive a clothing penalty if their attire is inappropriate for the contest.

Safety Equipment/Protective Gear

All safety equipment required for each contest will be provided by the contestants. Nothing will be furnished at the State Competition by the Technical Committee as is indicated in the National Contest rules unless otherwise noted.

Awards Ceremony:

Official SkillsUSA attire OR White button down shirt or blouse, black pants or skirt (for women), tie (for men), black shoes. The Blazer or Windbreaker will not be required. If students do not have white tops and black pants or skirts, business attire will be allowed. Jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. will not be allowed. Students not appropriately dressed will not be allowed on the stage to receive their awards.

The topic to be addressed by contestants in these events is how our slogan, SkillsUSA: Champions at Work, relates to our national program of work in the area of the Professional Development.

Within this topic, contestants might illustrate or discuss any of the following:

  • How SkillsUSA’s professional development opportunities motivate students to be the best they can be in their technical skill development and in their personal and professional development.
  • How members grow professionally by connecting with educators, community leaders, and business and industry representatives. SkillsUSA connects students to education and employment opportunities.
  • How students attending SkillsUSA leadership conferences and competitions develop professionally as they make connections with other students having similar interests. Through SkillsUSA, they network across their state, region and the nation.
  • How SkillsUSA provides opportunities for students to participate in a balanced program of work in which they can practice and demonstrate leadership, technical skills, teamwork, team building, creativity and management.
  • How SkillsUSA increases productivity by cultivating a highly skilled and knowledgeable work force to meet 21st century needs.
  • How SkillsUSA is the national organization for public high school and college/postsecondary technical students enrolled in trade, technical and skilled service profession instructional programs including allied health occupations.
